Tips for Buying the Right Mattress

Did you know that 46% of people lose sleep by having the wrong mattress or pillow? The right mattress can truly enhance your sleep and ensure wonderful comfort at night. There is no such thing as one right mattress as different mattresses benefit different people. Therefore, you need to find the mattress that suits your needs. For example, if you have back problems, such as scoliosis, you should try to invest in a memory foam mattress. To find the right mattress for you, keep in mind the following points.

1. Mattress Size

This seems fairly straight forward at first but there are many factors people do not take into consideration when deciding on mattress size. It is not just about the size of your bedstead or bed frame. There are a number of factors you should take into account. Do you sleep with a partner? Do you often have your children climbing into your bed at night? Do you toss and turn a lot? These can all impact what size mattress you should get. You should also ensure that you check the length as well as the width. Choose a mattress that is at least 10cm longer than you. You should also take into consideration the size of your bed and bedroom, ensuring it will not take up too much space. You can avail of mattresses in the following sizes:

  • Single/3 ft/3’0” Mattress - Width: 90cm x Length: 190cm
  • Small Double/4 ft/4’0” Mattress - Width: 120cm x Length: 190cm
  • Double/4ft 6/4’6” Mattress - Width: 135cm x Length: 190cm
  • King/5 ft/5’0” Mattress - Width: 150cm x Length: 200cm
  • Super King/6ft /6’0” Mattress - Width: 180cm x Length: 200cm

2. Mattress Type

The type of mattress that you should purchase will depend on a few factors; your needs, any allergies you may have and if you share the bed. Many people lose sleep due to their partner's sleep habits. If you identify with this, maybe you should invest in a pocket sprung mattress. Or if you suffer from any allergies or asthma, then a latex mattress would be right for you. We spoke with our mattress buyer, Geraldine, about the different types of mattresses and who they would suit. Here are the different types:

Pocket Sprung: This type of mattress is recommended if there is a size difference between you and your partner. A pocket sprung mattress spreads the body weight more evenly, giving a luxurious feeling and reducing the sleep disturbance caused by partner movement.

Coil Sprung: Coil sprung mattresses are designed to support the body evenly across the surface on the mattress. These are suitable for people that prefer firm support. Coil sprung mattresses are also recommended by Chiropractors.

Latex: This is a pocket sprung mattress with an extra layer of latex added at the top for extra comfort. Latex mattresses are highly breathable and gently contour to your body shape. They are ideal for people with allergies and asthma.

Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses help to maintain the correct posture, aligning the spine horizontally when lying on your side. They mould and then re-mould to your body's shape.

Gel: A gel mattress offers fantastic pressure relief and excellent body support. The gel material can help take pressure from your bones and give the feeling that you are floating while you sleep.

Natural: A natural mattress is made from the finest natural fillings, such as lambswool, and cashmere. This type of mattress can be good for people who have skin allergies and conditions.

Whatever mattress you decide on, do make sure you test it first and note the differences between the levels of support.

3. Budget

Another key element to remember is how much you are willing to pay for a mattress. This often depends on what purpose the mattress will have. For example, is it for your child? If so, then perhaps you should consider a less expensive mattress, as your child will grow and it is likely you will have to change the mattress frequently. However, if the mattress is for you, or you and your partner, you may want to invest time and money as a mattress that is properly cared for can last from 7-10 years even when used on a 365 day basis. There are a number of fantastic brands, such as King Koil, Meubles Hotel Collection, Dunlopillo, Relyon and Odearest, that offer a range of mattresses in a wide range of sizes and prices. No matter what type of mattress you are looking for, you will find it! Just ensure you know what you want or if not, feel free to ask for help. It is important that you find the right mattress for you!

4. Divan Set or Bedstead

When investing in a new mattress, you should consider the size of the bed it will be used in conjunction with and also, if you need a new bedstead. The divan base or bedstead the mattress will sit on will have an effect on the comfort of the mattress you choose. Most bed manufacturers recommend that you buy a mattress and divan base at the same time to get the optimal benefit from your new mattress purchase. If this is not possible, try to test your chosen mattress on a divan base or bedstead. There is no point investing in a great mattress if you are not going to feel the benefits because of the design of your bedstead. By the way, if the mattress in the showroom is on a platform base (no springs in the base), then it will give the same feel as putting it on a bedstead.
